Physical Education classes are a great place to start learning the behaviors necessary for living a healthy and productive life.  It has been scientifically proven that that exercise helps to prevent certain types of diseases, helps one to maintain a desirable weight, helps prevent injuries, helps build brain cells, and can improve one's mood.  This being said, it is absolutely imperative that all students, regardless of their athletic abilities, be given an opportunity to participate, succeed, and most importantly enjoy their Physical Education class.

In kindergarten, first, and second grade emphasis is on learning spatial awareness, safe movement speeds and dodging; basic loco-motor skills such as hopping, skipping, running, etc., following directions in a sequence, as well as cooperation and respect.  As the year progresses, we will add the concepts of balance and agility as well as sports skills such as throwing, catching, jumping, volleying, dribbling, and striking.  Most activities are designed so that the children will have many chances to practice each skill and improve.  We also introduce basic problem solving activities.

In third, fourth, and fifth grades we build on the previous years' experiences.  We start learning the very basic skills, rules, and strategies for popular sports as well as play creative games which emphasize fitness and fun.  Modified games in small groups allow for maximum participation and skills practice, as well as build confidence and team work. We also do team building and problem solving activities.

In sixth, seventh, and eighth, we focus on learning more advanced skills and strategies for popular sports. At this age, many children are already well versed in one sport or another. These children often serve as coaches sharing their gifts with the other students.  Fitness, critical thinking, and cooperative problem solving skills are also emphasized.

It’s easy to do well in Physical Education class:

  1. Be prepared for class: school gym uniform, sneakers, school sweatshirts.

  2. Be attentive to and follow all directions.

  3. Respect others: not talking when others are talking, willingness to work with anyone in their class, treating others nicely and refraining from teasing or putdowns, controlling their temper.

  4. Put forth good effort: students need to try their best in every activity every day.

  5. Play safely and follow all classroom rules and procedures.

  6. Play fairly and follow all activity rules.
