Action Alert: Urge Governor Murphy to Protect Religious Freedom in New Jersey

{Updated 1/14/2020}

The New Jersey Catholic Conference has updated their Action Alert regarding a package of bills introduced by the State Legislature intended to create a version of the federal Affordable Care and Patient Protection Act of 2010. Included in those bills is S3804/A5508, legislation that would eliminate the long-standing exemption in the current state law (P.L. 2005 c.251) that protects religious employers from having to provide health insurance coverage for family planning medications, devices, and procedures, including abortion inducing drugs and sterilizations. If signed into law, S3804/A5508 would impact the ability of Catholic Dioceses, Catholic schools, and Catholic Charities Agencies  to offer employees comprehensive health benefits without violating fundamental Catholic principles.

Despite our best efforts,  on January 9, 2020, the New Jersey Senate passed S3804/A5508 and the legislation heads to Governor Murphy’s desk for his signature. We have one more opportunity to protect our religious freedom.  Please contact Governor Murphy and ask that he conditionally veto S3804/A5508 to protect the religious employers’ exemption.  Click the link below and Take Action Today!
