NOVEMBER NEWS
SECOND GRADE

Language Arts
We have started our theme “Just Between Us.” We will be focusing on teamwork, cooperation, and getting along. Our Unit focuses on the use of nouns, prefixes and suffixes, and compound words. We will begin to work on writing letters and personal narratives. Our spelling test format will vary from week to week.
The Second Grade Classrooms Care! We are reading 100 books per class with Scholastic to donate books to school libraries in need of books! Your child is to read four books and fill out the reading log which is due on December 1st. Please sign their reading log before returning it.
We will begin learning the lower-case cursive alphabet. Please practice each night.
Math
Second grade will be working on place value to one hundred and even and odd numbers. We will also be comparing number values using the math symbols to represent greater than and less than. By the end of the month we will begin counting money. We will be discovering how to make change and learning new ways to show the same amount of money using different sets of coins.
Religion
The children will be presenting their Patron Saint Pumpkins. They will have the opportunity to present their pumpkin on KTN! We will celebrate the Feast of All Saints. In class we will talk about some of these saints and how their lives inspire and guide us in our own lives of faith.
We will begin preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Students will be working in their Reconciliation books to learn about the Ten Commandments, forgiveness, and sin.
Continue to practice the Act of Contrition.
In preparation of Thanksgiving the second grade will be discussing being thankful. Tying in with our Social Studies Unit on “Being a Good Citizen” we will be collecting food for Saint Vincent de Paul.
Social Studies
For the month of November we will begin studying America’s past, beginning with the Pilgrims. We will discuss the explorers that came to America.
Science
We will be finishing our unit on “Changes All Around Us” by learning how light and sound move. We will discuss the importance of these concepts in our everyday life.
