Starting the Second
Quarter in Spanish
Los peregrinos
We’ve wrapped up the first quarter of Spanish and jumped right into the second full of energy and awaiting El Día de Acción de Gracias (the Thanksgiving holiday).
In third grade we continue to learn about grammar, practice the calendar and expand our use of personal information. One of the new topics we plan to cover is the weather and related items.
The children will also learn vocabulary about Thanksgiving. Thanks to everyone for helping with our turkey feathers.
In fourth and fifth grades we are learning to read and understand basic sentences and expanding our use of known material to new situations.
On Tuesdays, 6th, 7th and 8th grades finished the quarter learning about Puerto Rico. Among other activities, the students researched facts, analyzed a poem, performed short translations and found a recipe (yum!).
On Thursdays, we continued to learn about grammar, practice with our dates, introductions and negative statements.
As a good listening practice, I recommend that the children watch a few minutes of television programming in Spanish with captioning in English (they can use the SAP audio channel where available).
Spanish Club
On the first Tuesday of every month, the St. Augustine Spanish Club meets after school. It provides a great opportunity for children to apply what they have learned, try extra-curricular activities, make friends and especially have fun!!!
Our second meeting was on November 4th. We learned words about Thanksgiving, played some related games and enjoyed a pumpkin cheesecake (¡Que rico!)
The next meeting will be on December 9th (this month we will meet on the second Tuesday of the month). Hope to see you there!!!
Just For Fun
Did you know?? – El pavo is the male turkey and la pava is the female turkey.
Gracias means thanks, but gracia has other meanings. For example, the sentence “¡Tiene gracia!” means “It’s/He’s/She’s funny!”
Translate this – “Me gusta comer pavo en el Día de Acción de Gracias”
