Kinder Kids November News

Kindergarten continues to work on their school routines and making new friends. They have learned to be part of a class, work together, work independently and that it’s okay to make a mistake.  God is the only one that is perfect!  They continue to learn how to be a responsible helper (flag/prayer leader, line leader, messenger, etc.), how to walk in a line, and follow our classroom and school rules.

In Religion most children have mastered how to make the Sign of the Cross and continue to work on new prayers. They are learning the Hail Mary, the Our Father, Angel of God and Grace before and after meals. They are also reading and discussing bible stories as well as making crafts that go along with them. They participate in the school masses and sit with their buddy classes learning proper church behavior by example. The children are learning how to be followers of Jesus and how we can all strive to be Saints.

In Math we have been using manipulatives to understand position,
sorting, classifying, understanding and extending patterns, comparing and
creating patterns, making and reading graphs, and counting groups of numbers from 0 to 5.  The children enjoy using everyday situations when learning problem solving strategies.

In Reading/Phonics the students continue with lessons and activities to reinforce phonemic awareness, shared reading, the alphabet, and beginning reading concepts.  With shared reading the children listen and respond to stories, rhymes, sequence events and songs. With the use of little readers and guided reading the children are learning word attack strategy prompts.  The children are focusing on directionality, one to one correspondence, locating known and unknown words and taking word clues from pictures.  The children take a picture walk through the book before they read. With beginning reading the children also continue with their weekly vocabulary words. The children review them each day in class as well as the very important home review each night.  Wow! How fast their reading word list will grow.

In Handwriting the children are learning proper handwriting posture.
*Sit straight and tall
*Both feet flat on the floor
*Begin at the top and move down
*Hold pencil using the “lobster claw” grasp
*Take your time!

The children are getting plenty of practice in writing through their class books that they are making as well as in their journals.

In Social Studies the children learned all about fire safety and had a visit by the South River Fire Department. They loved going in and out of the truck. This month the children will be learning about the Native American Indians and the Pilgrims. We will be talking about how they lived, hunted, farmed, ate, and the clothes they wore, and  how they traveled to America on the Mayflower. We will dress up as Pilgrims and Native Indians and have a “Thankful Feast” and prayer service.

Kindergarten is learning that ”giving is as important as receiving.” This month we plan to collect food for families who are less fortunate than us.

We would like to wish the following a “Happy Birthday” for the month of November:
