5th Grade October News


Science

We are learning all about how scientists classify living things. After learning about how plants are divided into the phylum vascular or non-vascular, we did some exploring to see what we could find.
              

We are also working on creating display boards that will give information about each of the 5 kingdoms.  For some more information about classification, visit the following websites:

Religion  
This month we are learning about how to live in the Spirit of God and following God’s call to holiness.  We will continue to learn about the liturgical season of Ordinary time. As October is a month dedicated to the rosary we will spend time learning about the mysteries of the rosary.
     
Our Saint for the month is St. Teresa of Lisieux. We will learn about her “little way” and how we can follow it. To learn more about St. Theresa, follow the link below.

Language Arts
Reading
We are focusing on the reading skills of problem & solution, cause and effect, and making inferences.  We are currently working on the genre of Non-Fiction, as we study the goals and accomplishments of famous athletes


.Writing
Students have written their own non-fiction story about a goal they have accomplished.  The students will continue writing a non-fiction essay about the Explorers they have studied in Social Studies.  Later this month, the students will write non-Fiction essays about the United States Government and the upcoming election.



Grammar
We are currently working on sentence structure, and creating compound sentences using conjunctions.  As student’s grammar skills continue to develop, they will be incorporating the skills in their weekly writing prompts. 

 

Social Studies

The students are finishing up their study of the Early European Explorers.  Later we will learn how their explorations helped pave the way for the formation of the United States.




Before we study our Nation’s formation, we will study our government, and focus on the upcoming Presidential Election.  The students will have the opportunity to simulate the election process, gaining a full understanding of the work and planning that goes into running for an office in our country.
